Mission & Vision of the Museum of Biblical Art

The Mission of MoBiA

The Museum of Biblical Art (MoBiA) fosters understanding and appreciation of art inspired by the Bible and its legacy through the centuries by highlighting the connection between art and religion in the Jewish and Christian traditions.

The Vision of MoBiA

The Museum will significantly expand the effort initiated by The Gallery at the American Bible Society. It will create a new model of scholarly exhibitions and strong educational programs that highlight biblically inspired art and will continue to redefine the dialogue about the place of religious art (and more generally religion) in our society. We are committed to making the Museum of Biblical Art an important new cultural institution with a role in making the knowledge and appreciation of Biblical art and history an integral part of mainstream culture.

As the only scholarly museum that celebrates art and the Bible in the United States, the Museum of Biblical Art will be ideally positioned to bridge the worlds of art, scholarship, and religion. We envision it as a friendly place to learn about art and the Bible, run in accordance with the highest of museum standards, and open to all. We have a unique opportunity to create an environment of collaboration between the Christian and Jewish faiths, a place where visitors can learn about the original context, meaning and functions of religious art. Unlike many art museums, MoBiA will address the history of art from a perspective that is familiar to many Americans, that is, the tenets and stories of the Judeo-Christian tradition.
