Have you ever felt different than the people around you?

Have you ever tried to minimize the things that made you feel so different?

I know I have. I imagine just about everyone who has sat in a classroom, or in a meeting, or in someone else’s home has felt like they didn’t quite fit in—like there was something wrong with them for not thinking and acting like the people around them. For not liking the things they did. For not getting excited about the same things, or saddened by the same things.

In these situations, we tend to cover up the traits that make us unique so we can fit in with the crowd. Like a chameleon changing colors to blend into its surroundings, we act like someone we think will fit in, and hope no one will catch on to our act.

Why do we do this? Why do we defend ourselves by covering up ourselves? It’s normal, right? Of course it’s normal, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best solution.

When we feel like outcasts, our silly human brains say to us, “Put up a wall. Avoid judgment at all costs. Protect your self-esteem.” But if you can spare a moment to listen, Jesus wants to let you know that if you simply seek him, things can get better. If you walk in his ways, and know that true love and acceptance rests in his hands, you can experience peace.

When you get tired of the masquerade, turn to God’s Word for comfort, guidance and acceptance.

Here are four Bible verses for when you feel like you just don’t fit in:

  1. Philippians 1:6 (GNTD)
And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.
  2. Ephesians 2:4-6 (GNTD)
But God’s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God’s grace that you have been saved. In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world.
  3. Matthew 10:29-31 (GNTD)
For only a penny you can buy two sparrows, yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. As for you, even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth much more than many sparrows!
  4. Psalm 139:13-14 (GNTD)
You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart.
