The country of Georgia is situated at the crossroads between Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. It is an ancient land of rugged mountains and very determined people. After the end of World War II, Georgia continued to suffer through decades of Communist rule and suppression, before finally declaring its independence from Russia in 1991.
When the Bible Society returned to a school in a settlement for displaced people in Tserovani — a community still hurting and in shock from losing their homes and way of life — the people rejoiced.
It had been five years since the Bible Society’s last visit. “They’ve come back!” was the joyful cry that greeted Bible Society staff as they arrived to provide Scripture to boys and girls.
These children’s families had lost everything during the 2008 Russian-Georgian war. But now they can read and cling to this promise together: “My God will supply all your needs” (Philippians 4:19b GNT).
While the families are grateful for the children’s Scripture that was brought, the need is still great. The school director has asked for 1,000 children’s Scripture books — one for each of his students. “My children must have the Bible!” said a teacher at the school.
