Recently I sat down with our point person for Bible ministry in New York City, Enid Almanzar, to get an update on how God is working through his Word in the “Big Apple.” Here’s a little of our conversation that can guide you in praying for God’s Word to transform lives in New York City:

What do you love about New York City and why do you love working there?

The beautiful mosaic of cultures, traditions and people makes New York City a wonderful place to minister. Plus, I get the honor of continuing the rich, 200-year-legacy of American Bible Society in the city it was founded!

How do you see God moving in New York City?

I see greater interfaith collaboration around social issues of mutual concern. I also see growing faith-based partnerships such as Lead.NYC, NY CityServe, etc.

Can you share a few Bible engagement projects currently underway?

  • Saturate NYC provides contextualized resources for ministries that love and serve the city. This year alone, 12 thematic Bible resources have been created to support leaders working on the ground.
  • Acts Global Journey challenges leaders to re-engage Scripture with a 28-day Bible devotional written by seasoned city movement leaders from around the country.
  • Christian Community Development Association’s Immerse Curriculum is a small group curriculum that teaches community development through a biblical lens.
  • The Community Bible Experience will spur Bible engagement for Catholics in Brooklyn parishes through an 8-week study of the New Testament in a small-group format.

How can we pray for New York City and on-going ministry efforts there?

  • Pray for increased Bible engagement through the various partnerships and Scripture engagement initiatives.
  • Pray for God’ peace amidst so much unrest and tension around pressing social issues such as immigration, race, and religion.
  • Pray for unity that promotes the welfare of the city (Jeremiah 29:7).
