Happiness is fickle, isn’t it? One moment you’re on top of the world, celebrating life’s biggest (and smallest) accomplishments. A moment later you’re up in arms, wondering how you arrived in such a dark place. You’re desperate to return to your “top of the world” self—but your former happiness feels beyond reach.

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a place of frustration, anxiety or uncertainty?  

To cope, you wake up early and go for a run. You take a long lunch. You treat yourself to coffee. You surround yourself with positive, encouraging friends. You take all the right steps to start feeling joyful again, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to overcome the thoughts that run wild in your mind.

Why am I feeling this way? I guess I just don’t have it today. What will it take for me to feel happy?

When you feel down in the dumps, turn to God for joy. Meditate on God’s Word for peace. And rely on God for the strength to break out of your funk.

These four Psalms will get you started:

  1. Psalm 42:11 (GNTD)
    Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.
  2. Psalm 118:14 (GNTD)
    The LORD makes me powerful and strong; he has saved me.
  3. Psalm 28:7 (GNTD)
    The Lord protects and defends me; I trust in him. He gives me help and makes me glad; I praise him with joyful songs.
  4. Psalm 16:8 (GNTD)
    The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid; what can anyone do to me?
