Years ago, I found myself struggling through what felt like a solid six months of a severe “case of the Mondays.” Every morning, I tried to walk into work feeling motivated and positive. Structures had shifted, and I was told there wouldn’t be an opportunity for me to grow. I didn’t have much left to keep me busy, and I started to wonder if I was in the right place. I struggled to discern God’s will for my next career move, becoming complacent in the process.
So often we equate our value as individuals with our work, defining who we are by what we do. I easily fell into this trap, wondering if I even had the guts to take a chance and grow some place else. I checked out mentally and let self-doubt grow and fester in my heart, which began to show in my demeanor and even my work.
This sort of professional lull can happen often, whether brought on by a discouraging disruption, a personal trial that spills into work or even a revelation that a job no longer fuels a passion. Whatever the reason, it’s important to keep perspective by seeking God’s guidance, even when we don’t feel like it. This will not only keep us centered in truth when circumstances shift, but also will help us encourage others who may be dealing with a similar situation.

Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis writes,
“I am sure that God keeps no one waiting unless he sees that it is good for him to wait. When you do enter your room, you will find that the long wait has done you some kind of good which you would not have had otherwise.” I took great comfort in knowing that although my situation may not have felt ideal or even hopeful, God was using it for good in my life. I tried to use this understanding to grow in faith and patience.”
The next time you find yourself questioning your professional future–and wondering if you’ve fallen into a dead-end job–turn to the Bible for hope. These three verses will get you started:
- Rely on God when you feel defeated and discouraged.
Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9 (GNTD) - Remain patient and trust in the Lord during your trials.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. — Proverbs 3:5-6 (GNTD) - Depend on God’s strength in difficult circumstances.
God is my savior; I will trust him and not be afraid. The Lord gives me power and strength; he is my savior. — Isaiah 12:2 (GNTD)
