I’ve come to realize that life is far from a linear journey. Sometimes relationships generate unexpected pain. Sometimes harmless decisions cause stress and hardship. Sometimes the most exciting events in life lead to nothing but disappointment.

In these situations, I’m often left thinking, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” Have you been here before?

Maybe your son recently came home from school, fell into your arms and shared heartbreaking news: he’s been experimenting with drugs—and he can’t stop. You never thought one of your children, let alone your courteous and respectful son, would struggle with an addiction. But there you stood,  at a loss for words, wondering how to respond.

Or maybe you went into work on an average Monday, only to see a member of your company’s HR staff waiting by your desk. You casually greeted her—and engaged in small talk—before she went on a monologue about your declining performance. “I’m sorry,” she said. “But you have to pack up your belongings and head out by noon.” Shocked, you packed up your desk and returned home, dreading the pending conversation with your spouse.

Regardless of your circumstances, your journey has taken an unexpected turn. And you’re not sure how to get back on track. Where can you turn?

You can start by opening your Bible and meditating on the peace and assurance found in God’s Word. These four Bible verses will get you started:

  1. John 14:27 (GNTD)
Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.
  2. 1 John 5:14 (GNTD)
We have courage in God’s presence, because we are sure that he hears us if we ask him for anything that is according to his will.
  3. Philippians 4:6-7 (GNTD)
Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
  4. Isaiah 26:3-4 (GNTD)
You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever; he will always protect us.
