God’s Word of Mercy and Forgiveness
Introduction
Psalm 121: Today’s reading is from a section in the book of Psalms entitled “Songs of Ascents” (Psalms 120-134); these psalms were used by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem from various parts of the land. Jerusalem is built on a hill, and the Temple was located on the hill called Zion. These “Songs of Ascents” were probably used by worshipers as they were “going up” to Jerusalem for one of the major festivals. Psalm 121 expresses assurance of God’s protection as pilgrims made their way to and from Jerusalem.
Scripture Reading
The Lord Our Protector
1I look to the mountains;
where will my help come from?
2My help will come from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3He will not let you fall;
your protector is always awake.
4The protector of Israel
never dozes or sleeps.
5The Lord will guard you;
he is by your side to protect you.
6The sun will not hurt you during the day,
nor the moon during the night.
7The Lord will protect you from all danger;
he will keep you safe.
8He will protect you as you come and go
now and forever.
Today’s Key Verse: Psalm 121: 2
My help will come from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
Reflect
What question is raised in verse 1? How does the remainder of the psalm answer the question?
When have you sought help from God?
Pray
Lord God, you are my protector and you are always awake. My help comes from you and I trust in your steadfast love and care. Amen.
