In mid-January, hundreds of volunteers gathered at Calvary Baptist Church in New York City, preparing for a citywide homeless outreach event called “Don't Walk By.” The American Bible Society and The Bowery Mission, New York City's largest spiritually based homeless outreach program, provided Bibles and Scripture Portions for volunteers to hand out while traversing the streets of Midtown Manhattan.
The goal was to reach out to as many homeless people as possible, offering them information about The Bowery Mission and other local homeless ministries. Encouragement from God's Word was a key goal as well.
Hundreds of homeless men and women received a better understanding of where they could receive food, medical care, spiritual counseling and other services offering opportunities for life change. One beneficiary, Anthony Kravit, said, “The Bible has impacted my life by giving me hope, but most all showing me love . . . the love of Jesus.”
