It’s hard not to love Memorial Day weekend. For most Americans, these few days represent a chance to rest from work, enjoy the outdoors and spend time with friends and family over delicious food.
As with most holidays, the fellowship and feasting are only as sweet as the things they commemorate. On Memorial Day, we remember the men and women who died while serving our country. This annual tradition is powerful and enduring because our liberty was purchased at a high cost—the sacrifice of thousands.
As we celebrate our fallen American heroes this Memorial Day, take time to thank God for their amazing sacrifice. As you pray, reflect on the words of Jesus:
John 5:13 (CEVD)
“The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them.”
You can also take time this Memorial Day to pray for families who have lost loved ones in combat. Read this portion from Psalm 91 and ask God to cover grieving families with comfort, refuge and love.
Psalm 91:1-4 (CEVD)
Live under the protection
of God Most High
and stay in the shadow
of God All-Powerful.
Then you will say to the [Lord],
“You are my fortress,
my place of safety;
you are my God,
and I trust you.”
The Lord will keep you safe
from secret traps
and deadly diseases.
He will spread his wings
over you
and keep you secure.
His faithfulness is like
a shield or a city wall.
