God’s Renewing Word of Wisdom

Introduction

Psalm 1: This psalm serves as an introduction to the book of Psalms and introduces us to the Law of the LORD.

Scripture Reading

BOOK ONE

True Happiness

1 Happy are those
who reject the advice of evil people,
who do not follow the example of sinners
or join those who have no use for God.
2 Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord,
and they study it day and night.
3 They are like trees that grow beside a stream,
that bear fruit at the right time,
and whose leaves do not dry up.
They succeed in everything they do.

4 But evil people are not like this at all;
they are like straw that the wind blows away.
5 Sinners will be condemned by God
and kept apart from God’s own people.
6 The righteous are guided and protected by the Lord,
but the evil are on the way to their doom.

Today’s Key Verse: Psalm 1:6

The righteous are guided and protected by the LORD, but the evil are on the way to their doom.

Reflect

In verse 3, people who follow the Law are compared to trees growing beside a stream. Such trees put down deep roots that allow them to be healthy and bear fruit even in times of little rain. Does this metaphor resonate with your life in faith? The opening verse of Psalm 1 describes the true source of happiness. What does this verse teach you?

Pray

Holy God, like the trees of your creation, nurture and sustain me and help me to set down deep roots so that my faith may bear fruit throughout the seasons of my life. Teach me that true happiness is found when I place my trust in you and follow your teachings. Amen.
